The Obsession

The Obsession by Jesse Q. Sutanto is a young adult thriller. Nobody knows Delilah like Logan does, and in the Obsession, he proves it.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Delilah. The name of my destiny.”

Logan has a history of being obsessed with his love interests. Some might call him a stalker; others may call him romantic. This depends, of course, on how much detail you know. Last year, the love of his life committed suicide, and Logan has never been the same. That is until Sophie “sent him a gift” in the form of Delilah. Logan decides to figure out the best way to approach Delilah, to take her on the best date of her life, and make her fall in love with her. He does his research, and he’s extremely thorough.

“A wave of revulsion toward Brandon and his endless racism and misogyny coursed through my veins. I’d done the society a favor by killing him, really.”

However, Delilah has enough crap on her plate. After accidentally on purpose murdering her stepfather, her anxiety is through the roof. On the one hand, she was relieved because Brandon was an abusive asshole, and on the other hand, she was overwhelmed with guilt. She was now a murderer. With his partner sniffing around, Delilah does everything she can to avoid being caught. She thinks she’s gotten away with it and decides now is the time to go on a date with Logan. And it’s the best date she’s ever been on, that is until she finds out he’s been stalking her. Not only has he been stalking her, but he knows what she did.

“She was a fighter. A Valkyrie. She was so much more than I thought she was. She was incredible. And I loved her so much for it.”

This book was an exciting thriller. I enjoyed that it was similar to the show and book You, but Delilah was badass. I think this change in the story was really refreshing. Delilah is her own person, and, after a long time of abuse from Brandon- she isn’t going to take it from Logan. She’s determined to get out of both situations and go to college without a mark on her record. There is this underlying plot of a drug ring occurring in the school they go to, but, other than its role in the ending I found this to be a little distracting. I understand the role it played in the overall plot, but I don’t think it was necessary to get this done.

“Mom always did have the worst taste in guys.”

From the beginning of the book, we understand that Delilah’s father has passed away. The reason why is merely hinted at: he made a mistake, and people hate him now. I would have liked more information about this- mostly as someone who hates only getting small pieces of a story but it never completing. There were just small pieces of information fed to us throughout this story that peaked my interest, but, nothing came of them. This alone is why this book was not a 5 star read. I wanted more information about these tidbits, and wasn’t given them. It felt unnecessary in the end.

Overall though, this was a fun thriller and an interesting take on the You series.
